Brush Plating Applications Utilizing AeroNikl® Sulfamate Nickel on Aircraft Components

Abstract
Since its development in 1982, the demand for “brush plated” sulfamate nickel coatings by the aircraft/aerospace industry has steadily increased. Many aircraft components once tank sulfamate nickel plated are now being plated without immersion using brush plating techniques. Reasons that substantiate the increasing use of brush sulfamate nickel as an alternative to tank sulfamate nickel are: minimal localized masking requirements; less danger of chemical attack to the part during preparation and plating; faster rates of plating; little post-machining requirements; and, reduced environmental concerns with small solution volume requirements. This paper examines the properties and characteristics of brush sulfamate nickel solutions (AeroNikl®) and the deposits obtained. In addition, testing programs will be reviewed which provide supporting data for consideration of the use of brush sulfamate nickel as an alternative to tank sulfamate nickel. Case examples of aircraft engine components currently being brush nickel plated will also be presented.
