This paper describes the effect of piston slap noise by measuring the piston lateral movement, piston deformation, and cylinder block vibration using the two blocks which have different deformation at upper part of cylinder in actual operating engine condition. In the case of the block with large cylinder deformation such as the alminum block, it was clarified by this study that one important source of this noise was not only piston deformation but also cylinder deformation by means of the changing piston clearance.
