Abstract
The acoustic quality of a car is judged not only in terms of engine, transmission or aerodynamic noise perceived inside the car body but by many small concealed sources of noise which are present in the body itself and which are ready to appear when the car is driven on a more or less rough road surface. These sources are the assembly defects; clattering, squeaking, crackling, knocking are some of their acoustic effects. The problem for the car manufacturers is to detect and determine the causes for this kind of noise. The Joint Research Committee (a cooperation of Rover Group, Fiat, Peugeot SA, Renalut, Volvo, Volkswagen and Daimler Benz) decided to start working on this subject five years ago with the ultimate objective to establish an industrialized automatic test and diagnosis system. This paper discusses the approach followed in the testing and measurement setput, the hardware of the realized prototype and the software implemented for both measuring and processing the signals and automatic discrimination of defects.
