Abstract
A promising way to the dynamic behaviour evaluation of an I.C. engine is to represent the engine mechanical system as a modal model described by the modal synthesis of its mechanical components' modal models. According to this procedure, a typical four cylinder I.C. engine has been subdivided in its fundamental components. The modal models derived from the above components have been assembled and coupling coefficients between the engine components have been introduced: then the modal characteristics of the hybrid model of the complete engine was computed. As a final step the engine block was stiffened and the dynamic response of the modified system was predicted. The comparison between calculated values and experimental ones shows that correct trends in the acoustic and vibrational behaviour can be predicted if real excitation forces together with their application points are carefully introduced into the model
