Turbocharging Techniques for Sports Car Engines

In recent years, Porsche have examined various turbocharging techniques with the objective of improving the transient and steady-state operational characteristics of turbocharged sportscar engine.
The performance of the Porsche 944 Turbo S under both transient and steady- stage conditions could be enhanced by combining the engine with a pulse- turbocharging system.
A simple mathematical model was used to demonstrate that a variable turbine geometry and a sequential turbocharging system result in similar transient characteristics. However, specific engine power is substantially lowered by introducing variable turbine geometry.
In a predicted comparison with pulse-turbocharging with one single turbocharger, twin turbocharging with two small-size exhaust gas turbochargers improves the engine's transient characteristics only slightly when maintaining the same specific engine power output
