Diesel Fuel Injection Systems for Heavy Duty Engines
Published January 01, 1989 by Institution of Mechanical Engineers in United Kingdom
The diesel engine has become of great significance on a worldwide scale. The discussion and development of adequate combustion systems with regard to environmental protection have been intensified.
Bosch recognized in time, what demands would be placed on the fuel injection systems by the engine manufacturers. Bosch has initiated developments to meet the demands of reduced emissions and combustion noise, while simultaneously retaining the traditional advantages of fuel combustion and reliability of the diesel engine.
The inline pump injection pressure capabilities have been expanded through various development programmes. Now inline pumps with integrated timing control and unit injectors are currently in development. Two significant objectives established for new products include improved control of the injection rate and pre-injection characteristics.
Review of heavy duty trucks currently in use indicate the need for improvement in various areas, for example temperature dependent control of the start fuel quantity.
Besides mechanical injection systems, electronically controlled systems offer the capability to control more engine parameters.
