Influence of the Pulsating Flow Operation on the Turbine Characteristics of a Small Internal Combustion Engine Turbocharger

The results of an experimental test rig investigation carried out and developed jointly by the Centro Ricerche Fiat and the Department of Energetic Engineering of the University of Genoa are given below. The performance of a centripetal turbocharger turbine for small high- speed i.c. engines under pulsating flow operation was examined. The results of several unsteady flow tests were compared with the turbine steady flow characteristics, usually employed for matching with the engine, measured both with "hot" and "cold" air feeding.
The values obtained from a quasi-steady flow calculation of the turbine pulsating performance were then compared with the experimental data.
