Abstract
One of the major issues facing all sectors of the U.S. economy is the increase in worldwide competition.
The loss of world market leadership has caused a radical change in design organization - “over the transom engineering” no longer applies. “Design for manufacture,” proposed by Thompson and Gandhi, has demonstrated evidence of cost savings; but requires new organization.
Composites require a “design for manufacture” process and organization. Two designs/economic models - traditional and quantitative/qualitative - are proposed.
