Abstract
In Europe, the Economic Commission for Europe initiated a leading role in preparing unified regulations for automobiles around the end of 1950's. In the 1980's, the U.S., European countries and Japan realized the increasing necessity for harmonizing national regulations on a global basis.
This report describes the necessity of International harmonization of automobile regulations, the JAMA's participation in the drafting of domestic standards and regulations, and the JAMA's attitude toward International standardization.
In addition, in view of the current deliberation of International harmonization of regulations for brakes and for lamps, the report discusses potential obstacles to harmonization and suggestions to overcome them.
