Abstract
This paper describes two related studies which examine the types of work organization changes which occur when new technology enters the workplace, and the impacts of those changes. The first study collected data on the costs and benefits of technology and work organization changes in 22 auto plants. The second collected data from 24 midwestern manufacturing plants, and was concerned with the ways in which work organization changes when new technology is installed, and which approaches to work organization are most effective under given sets of labor-management and technology implementation conditions.
