Abstract
The development of the wheel is traced from a materials viewpoint beginning with wood, the first documented wheel material, and ending with new materials underdevelopment such as composites and titanium. Passenger car and commercial highway wheei test requirements, design characteristics, finish types, and manufacturing methods are discussed relative to material changes. Present material usage, as well as comments on future trends, are reviewed.
