Abstract
The status of a newly developed software system, fully-integrated computer-aided design, analysis, and physical testing is discussed. A system of four software codes have been integrated to create a single design tool for the development of automotive bumpers, from concept through FMVSS certification.
A specific automotive bumper application has been chosen to demonstrate the development process. Software programs for design, dynamic impact analysis, and finite element structural analysis are examined. Both linear elastic and a newly-developed “fast” non-linear FBA solution is shown.
A newly-established computerized dynamic test facility is featured showing data recovery, storage, and plotting including force, deceleration and displacement as well as film and video recording devices.
