Abstract
This paper examines briefly the growth prospects of long haul civil air transportation in the Pacific basin and the contribution made by the RB211-524 in the Boeing 747.
The development of the latest committed version of this engine giving over 60,0001b static thrust is described as well as the design of the proposed 65,0.001b static thrust RB211-524L powerplant.
Finally the prospects for new Ultra High Bypass Ratio cowled turbofans for long haul operation in the next century are reviewed.
