Abstract
An overview of the recent techniques developed for experimental investigation and computer modeling of the combustion in diesel engines is presented with emphasis on the cross-validation of experimental and modeling results. Injection law, internal aerodynamics, spray formation and gas-wall heat transfers are considered in relation to the design of combustion chambers. Examples of both automotive prechamber and direct injection combustion systems are evaluated in the light of typical criteria of efficiency and emissions.
