A Knowledge-Based Approach to Robotic Assembly

In order to increase the efficiency and applicability of robotic assembly systems it is important to monitor assembly progress, identify errors and enable the robot to recover from an error situation. The introduction of Artificial Intelligence techniques in this area is aimed at improving the aid given to the robot by the control computer.
A knowledge-base has been created which encapsulates expertise on error recovery. The knowledge can be used to specify, for particular sensor data associated with assembly operations, those actions which would facilitate recovery without operator assistance.
This system is applied to robotic assembly problems provided by the industrial partner Electrolux plc in Darlington and its performance is discussed in this paper.
