Abstract
This paper describes some of the important considerations in the design of new vehicle electronic systems, examines some of the supporting and restraining forces, and considers the infrastructure to assure continued growth. Major building blocks of the on-board system are examined in detail. These include the vehicle electrical power supply, electronic control modules, sensors, actuators, and multiplex communications systems.
