An Overview of SAE AE-9B High Speed Ring Bus (HSRB) Performance

Abstract
The SAE AE-9B token passing High Speed Ring Bus (HSRB) is being developed to accommodate the next generation military systems interconnect network needs. Emphasis is placed on the requirements of battle damage survivability, deterministic message latency for multiple message priorities, and high throughput. These three requirements are used here as a measure of HSRB performance.
A brief review of HSRB operations, protocols, and synchronization methods is presented concentrating on those aspects most affecting performance. A generalized throughput efficiency comparison between token ring, token linear and contention buses is done. Throughput and latency equations for the HSRB under various loading conditions are derived and plotted. Reconfiguration methods and use of redundant hardware is discussed in order to present recovery methods and ring survivability for various fault conditions. Results and conclusions arising from these equations and figures are discussed and summarized.
