Abstract
This paper describes a new turbocharged and intercooled diesel engine which has been developed to meet market requirements for higher performance, better fuel economy and lighter engine weight for GVW 20 ton cargo trucks in Japan. The basic structure of this new engine is the ladder frame design with an OHC valve mechanism to obtain a simple and stiff cylinder block structure. In addition, a variable geometry turbocharger, variable intake air swirl system and electronically controlled fuel injection system have been combined with a unique square combustion chamber to get high BMEP with favorable torque characteristics and low fuel consumption over a wide range of engine speed.
