Abstract
Remaining concerned with the problem of pedestrians hit by cars,
the European Experimental Vehicle Committee (EEVC) has set up an ad
hoc group on pedestrian accidents, with the following tasks:
formulation of appropriate recommendations with regard to car
design, survey and coordination of European research projects and
activities, and cooperation with the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The report will present the conclusions of this group: 1)
progress that has been made in the relevant knowledge since EEVC
Working Group 7 published its report (presented at the ninth ESV
Conference): accident analysis, injury mechanisms, and tolerance
levels and development of tools for protection assessment:
mathematical models, pedestrian dummies, and component impact
devices; and 2) means and prospects for improving pedestrian
protection: guidelines to be considered for protection policies and
future regulations; short-term recommendations; and priorities for
future research.
