Abstract
In 1982, Cummins Engine Company began producing a new ten liter displacement heavy duty diesel engine designated the L10. This engine was a “clean sheet of paper” design which had goals of low emissions and low noise, while advancing the state of the art in fuel efficiency and durability.
Cummins has now joined Voith Transmissions in offering the L10 engine with the Voith D863ADR angle drive transmission to provide a new power package for transverse installations in the North American transit market.
Both the engine and the transmission have incorporated unique features which allow the package to be installed in current transit bus OEM vehicles.
This paper presents the development of that package.
