A Study on Residents Nuisance By Road Traffic Noise

Abstract
A study on residents' nuisance by road traffic noise was
carried out in seven different areas along principal road in and
around Tokyo, from 1975 to 1979, covering residents of 2,424 homes
in those areas. The work consists of the measurement of road
traffic noise and of social survey of residents and analysis
followed.
The questionnaire of about a hundred items cover those of
environment of residential area, degree of nuisance by road traffic
noise, degree of motivation toward social movement, etc. The
measurement of several noise indexes at the places distance 1 m
from the dwelling facades of each houses subjected to questionnaire
and continuous noise measurement over 24 hours at typical places in
each area were carried out succeedingly.
Together with the basic statistical analysis, models for
prediction of residents' nuisance are attempted and assessed
using the quantification theory of second kind. Further, the
results of this study are compared with similar studies in several
countries
