Abstract
An electrically assisted power steering system in a passenger car would provide benefits including fuel economy, system packaging and driveability features. The primary objective of this paper is to predict the mechanical behavior of the electrically assisted power steering system. This is done by constructing the system model using hondgraphs. From these, the system state equations are obtained. A computer program called Matrix X (TM) is used for obtaining both open and closed loop system response and eigen value solutions. An improved low inertia system configuration with improved response is also presented.
