Abstract
Conversion of the flame image into an electrical output using photo electric transducer has been used to attempt to determine the actual burning state in internal combustion engines. However, some difficulties have been experienced in practical application. Moreover, even after an image has been obtained by this elaborate process, it has proven impossible to analyze the flame image spectroscopically.
The authours experimented with optical fibers inserted into the combustion chamber to obtain the image. The light is transmitted through the bundle fiber to light receiver elements at the top of each fiber and passed through a band pass filter for a specific wavelength. The spectroscopic characteristics of the light is detected here for several wavelengths from the visible to the neighboring infrared range, giving an approximate spectrum of the flame image. Moreover, the relation between the rate of heat release and the spectrum of the flame was examined.
The combustion temperature can be estimated from the spectrum by evaluating the state of the soot deposit. The mesuring method and results are described in this paper.
