Abstract
The history of lube oils used in medium-speed diesel engines operating on the Inland Waterways is discussed. Considerable emphasis is given to recent experiences with Generation 4 oils in newer highly rated engines, especially lube systems for engines burning heavy fuels. Discussion and graphs are provided showing actual experience with high TBN oils operating with heavy fuel burning engines.
