Abstract
This paper describes the importance of starting with metal of uniform quality as the first stage in an aluminum casting operation. While many quality parameters are defined in current specifications, two additional variables: Metal Cleanliness and Gas Level, are not normally addressed. The importance of these variables is reviewed, and their impact upon cost and reliability of the products cast is emphasized. Commercial filtration and degassing processes that will control these variables are reviewed, and their utility discussed.
