Instruments for Determining the Trajectory of a Vehicle in a Collision and Measuring the Damage it Sustains

Abstract
Two instruments designed to aid investigators in reconstructing motor vehicle collisions are described. One is an apparatus which adjusts to the wheelbase and track width of most vehicles. It is used at the scene of a collision for the primary purpose of determining the location, heading, and sideslip angle of a vehicle at various points in its trajectory. It may also be used to simplify collection and reduction of scene evidence. The other is a gauge which measures the contour of the damaged profile and is used primarily while inspecting the involved vehicles. Field tests of both instruments are discussed. Improvements in locating vehicle positions and measuring damage profiles were noted during periods when the instruments were being used. These instruments also aid persons who are away from the scene or vehicle to evaluate field data.
