Abstract
Curvature along a bumper beams's length, which is plan view sweep, is used to improve performance and to enhance aesthetics of some of today's automobile bumper beams. However, putting a substantial amount of sweep in a bumper beam requires a material that is fairly ductile. A development program was initiated to ascertain whether adhesive bonding or weld bonding would provide a process whereby high strength or ultra high strength steels such as MartINsite could be used in such bumper beams. Adhesive bonding or weld bonding allows the bumper beam to be built from several parts; hence, the thickness and strength of each part can be varied. That is, channels with sweep made from a formable steel of one thickness can be weld-bonded, to sides made from high strength or ultra high strength steels of a second thickness. Thus, material and geometry can be varied to obtain a beam with the best performance by taking full advantage of material properties.
