Abstract
New concepts for starter-engine interfaces can extend starter life and improve reliability when used in current commercial and military aircraft installations. The pawl-and-ratchet and sprag clutches currently used are described and compared with improved types using new concepts such as continuous lubrication, wet-cavity interface, nonoverrunning, and sharing of lubrication with the main engine gearbox.
