Abstract
Economical performance depends on matching the transmission to the engine and vehicle. The best type is chosen from considerations of overdrive, ratio step and vehicle usage. A particular sort of synchromesh transmission is described and details are given of the use of computer prediction and rig testing to improve the fuel economy.
