Space Station Accommodation Engineering for Life Sciences Research Facilities

Abstract
System studies by MSFC, Lockheed and Boeing provide engineering support for ARC payload planning by developing conceptual designs and programmatics of systems to accommodate and integrate Life Sciences Research Facilities (LSRF) for non-human test subjects aboard Space Station. MSFC in-house studies in FY80-82 showed that accommodation aboard Space Station and Platform is feasible.
In FY83, Lockheed and Boeing established systems data on which to base conceptual design studies. They identified parameters of science, research equipment, subsystems and carriers potentially associated with accommodation and integration, and explored relationships between the significant parameters. Tradeoffs which were shown in exploratory studies to have significant impact on accommodation and integration design were studied in depth. To exercise and evaluate these parametric relationships and tradeoffs, the contractors developed design requirements for three strawman accommodation concepts. Highlights of the in-house and contracted work are described in this paper.
