Abstract
The effect of downsizing cars on traffic deaths becomes noticeable only over time, because new cars are only a small part of the car population. Factors needed to model the trend in traffic deaths are identified. The structure of two models to project trends in car occupant fatality risks is described. Illustrative projections of the car occupant fatality risk are presented. Research needed for improving projections is discussed.
