Abstract
This paper describes the development of Lucas Girling disc
brakes suitable for commercial vehicles, reference being made to
the historical background of the product and the problems
encountered.
A basis for determining the minimum size of braking surface and
lining volume necessary to ensure satisfactory brake life is then
described. Comments on the design of the caliper and disc, as well
as their relevance to the thermal and lining wear aspects of the
brake package are included. In conclusion, the reaction beam
two-pin sliding caliper disc brake range is reviewed, showing how
it meets the commercial vehicle brake requirements of the
1980's
