Vehicle Safety as An Integrated Concept
Published January 01, 1980 by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in United States
This paper provides an overview of the technical data for the Volkswagen research vehicle. The vehicle illustrates that the gap between research vehicles and production models is becoming smaller on the basis of the steadily advancing technical quality of production vehicles. The individual components of the IRVW II will be gradually introduced into production models.
Future fuel price development will determine whether an automobile like it will be affordable. Volkswagen assumes that the increased price for the technology offered should be compensated more than twice by fuel savings during the vehicle useful life.
Volkswagen has succeeded in setting clear trends for the future of the automobile. The IRVW II represents a large step forward on the road away from being an object of luxury and prestige toward being a functional object which meets societal demand.
