Abstract
Airports may be seen as self-contained systems composed of a number of sub-systems.
By defining, in detail, the aspects, characteristics, and devices which comprise the overall system and its subsystems, a detailed assessment may be made of the state of safety in all activities of an operating airport.
Transportation system safety is defined as an approach and a body of analytical tools which provide a mainly preventive approach to increasing overall safety on airports. Through hazard identification and treatment unsafe conditions and practices can be uncovered and treated or eliminated before they cause or are involved in accidents.
