Abstract
The goal of the study is to develop and systematize the most
important characteristic values of the "Steering-Vehicle"
linkage and to survey analytical methods which do not limit the
dynamic behavior of the vehicle. Testing methods are described
which allow immediate and continuous measurement of appropriate
steering and vehicle parameters. An automatic steering device
eliminates human factors from driving trial influences.
Mechanical hesitations are subdivided into individual
categories, e.g., "play" in the steering, elasticity of
components, inertial characteristics of static and dynamic
components, etc. Further analysis of linkage examines the
asymmetric steering characteristics. Numerical values are developed
to quantify various types of losses; by these means, the testing
procedures offer definitive evaluation of steering linkage
characteristics.
Four representative systems are presented: an ideal linkage, a
linkage with proportional time-delays, a linkage with
non-proportional delays, and a totally non-ideal system. Finally,
the linkages are presented in terms of static and dynamic
hysterises losses.
