Abstract
The different acceleration capability of naturally aspirated and
turbocharged diesels used in utility vehicles influences vehicle
operation.
By an examination of the factors determining engine acceleration
capability, the author establishes that acceleration
characteristics of naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines are
primarily dependent on the value of the moment of inertia
approaching the unity of the effective moment. Since the moment of
inertia of a turbo-charged engine is smaller it accelerates
better.
