A Test-Stand for Measuring Operationally-Determined Braking Force: Deviations of Two, Simultaneously-Tested Brakes

Abstract
The test-stand described in the paper is better suited for evaluating the distribution of braking forces in a two-axle vehicle than are single-brake test-stands. Simultaneous testing of one brake from both the front and back axle permits immediate evaluation of braking-force and energy distribution at any moment, with all the advantages of test-stand analysis. This is particularly important due to the time-dependent nature of many braking parameters. Nevertheless, the testing procedure does have certain limitations; it is difficult to model the cooling conditions during braking, the effect of the chassis characteristics is not taken into account, the interrelationship between forces acting on the brakes and road surfaces cannot be duplicated, etc. For such reasons, this test-stand procedure cannot completely eliminate tests on driving courses. However, the cost of testing is reduced considerably, and optimization, establishment of tolerances, and verification of characteristics can be extensively achieved through this test-stand procedure.
