Abstract
Report discusses a joint exploration by Gaz de France and Saviem
into using liquid natural gas (LNG) as a means of reducing urban
pollution. Two distinct operations were undertaken
simultaneously.
~ a Saviem mini-bus was adapted to LNG and a fueling station was
set up in the Paris area.
~ Laboratory tests were conducted to determine an optimum
performance - emissions relationship.
Results indicate that LNG operation has definite advantages for
improving environmental quality and passenger comfort. Smoke
emissions at starting or under load are essentially nil. Control of
the ignition cycle assures reduction of the noise and vibration
level. Emissions are comparable to those of a direct injection
diesel, based on the 1977 American Emission Standards, at a
sacrifice of power at maximum rpm, not a significant factor in
urban operation. Technical possibilities will be strongly dependent
on legislation.
