Calculation of the Damping Response of a Four-Wheel Vehicle With Consideration of Transverse and Yawing Vibrations on Arbitrarily Uneven Roadways

Abstract
Previous studies have not examined the lateral driving forces
and vibrations caused by unevenness of roadways in relation to
vehicle damping characteristics. The paper presents a method of
determining not only vertical vibrations of a vehicle caused by
road irregularities, but transverse and yaw movement as well. A
simulation model is developed which takes into account the lateral
spring-stiffness of the tires, the diagonal stiffness, and the
height of the center-of-gravity and of the center-of-gyration.
Vibrational amplification factors are discussed and effective (rms)
values of vibrations are calculated. Calculations for a
representative truck showed:
1. Dynamic lateral forces on the tires can lead to frictional
losses as do wheel loads.
2. The effect of transverse vibrations on vehicle body agitation
can be considerable.
3. Fixed axles produce a combination of wheel tramp and lateral
vibrations in the wheel's resonant frequency range.
4. For independent-suspension systems, the height of the
center-of-gyration, but not the type of suspension, determines
damping characteristics.
5. A light, fixed axle with a wide damper track is equal to good
independent-suspension in terms of damping
