Abstract
The paper describes investigations of traffic noise and reviews possibilities for its control. Tests were conducted on commercial vehicles under various driving conditions, including differences in speeds, acceleration, and equipment. Both total volume levels and frequency-dependent levels were analysed, and the measuring distance was likewise studied in relationship to the recorded sound levels. Results indicate that vehicle and driving parameters are important~e.g., speed, weight, tire shape, etc.~but that other factors are also quite significant. These include roadway construction and condition, geographical coordination of roads and housing, and provisions within houses. In particular, measures adopted in street construction often prove more economical than modifications to vehicles; such measures can include walls, acoustic panels, tarring of road surfaces, etc. An effective noise-control program will necessitate an approach balanced between all of these different measures.
