Abstract
Hydraulic and mechanical sources can no longer efficiently supply total power for the new highly sophisticated construction and mining equipment because payloads have increased so greatly. Electric drive vehicles provide a solution, but necessitate development of advanced wire and cable systems designed to satisfy more rigorous requirements than standards such as SAE J558a and SAE J878a currently mandate. EXANE, a flame retardant, irradiated, cross-linked polyolefin insulation, is one such system, which has been subjected to extensive testing to prove its effectiveness. These tests and their results are detailed and EXANE's performance is compared to that of other popular insulation systems.
