Abstract
The origin, loss and retention of properties in plastic materials is reviewed. Structure-property relationships are used to define and illustrate the development of properties. The chemical changes effecting property loss are summarized as is the retention with the latter concentrating on protection via additives. A broad approach is employed in order to develop tenable generalizations.
