Abstract
This paper reviews the previous methods of modelling the transient response of turbocharged diesel engines and highlights their dependence on empirical data. It develops a mathematical model of such engines based on the “filling-andemptying” technique, and describes how empirical feedback can be used to improve the model. The good correspendence between calculated and experimental results is shown.
The mathematical model is then used to evaluate the linearized transfer function of the diesel engine for later use in control studies.
