An Analytical Study of the Effects of Turbine Variable Geometry Operation on Turbine Blade Cooling Requirements for Fixed Match Point Turbojet Application

Abstract
An assessment of the fundamental design and operational variables which influence the choice and performance of turbine blade cooling systems is made. The relative impact of turbine aerodynamic design, cooling system design, and operating regime on cooling flow requirements is investigated, and the important variables influencing off design cooling performance are reviewed.
The study shows that in addition to the obvious influence of gas stream and coolant temperature level, cooling requirements are strongly dependent on aerodynamic design. Furthermore, off design performance requirements can significantly influence the choice of the cooling system as well as the cooling system design/sizing point.
