Abstract
This paper shows how new formulations of oils, resistant to the particularly severe conditions in four stroke motorcycle engines have been evolved. New bench test procedures, developed from the field, racing surveys and road tests, were used for the study of the following variables : oil film and oil consumption (viscosity), piston failure (scuffing and preignition) oil oxidation (thickening), piston cleanliness (dispersancy, detergency) and low temperature starting properties.
