Abstract
A relatively new technique for combining fiberglass reinforcements and polyester resins into reinforced plastic parts has given reinforced thermosets the capability of approximating metal finishes. This material is sheet molding compound, commonly called SMC. It has been used successfully in large quantities by automotive companies for the past four years.
This paper covers the successful application of SMC from basic design to use in the field of some recreational and farm implement components. Several proven advantages are listed for the use of fiberglass-reinforced plastic and SMC in particular.
