Abstract
A discussion of construction economics and community impacts of the new Dallas/Fort Worth Airport is presented. Planning and design criteria and a description of construction of the airport development are presented and serve as a background for the information pertaining to economics and related community impacts.
To evaluate the economic effect of construction, two plots are presented and analyzed. The first plot pertains to the commitments and cash flow of construction funds as a function of time. The second plot pertains to the number of construction personnel on the airport site as a function of time. Personnel levels and the construction costs are used as a basis for analyzing the impact on the economy of communities served by the airport.
It is concluded that the construction of new, large scale airports has major impacts on the economy and life style of communities in the vicinity of the airport. Since an airport is one of the catalysts necessary for continued economic growth of a region, the construction phase can act as the first step in a long-term growth pattern which continues during the operational phase.
