Abstract
Many authors have investigated the problem of instability and critical speeds of a rotor supported symmetrically between two identical journal bearings. The present investigation extends this work to a rotor situated at any location either in between or outside the two bearings and the bearings themselves can be of different geometry and dimensions. Such an investigation will be of more practical importance, as many rotor bearing systems in actual use do not conform to the idealized symmetric system.
