Abstract
Between 1965 and 1968 the French National Council for Road Safety (ONSER) carried out a thorough clinical study on a small sample of accidents. On the spot an engineer examined as soon as possible after the accident the vehicles involved, in particular the state of the main safety equipment. Then he tried to establish whether this state had played a role in the accidents or not.
A psychologist interviewed the drivers in particular with a view to obtaining data on the relation between man-machine, type of driving, driver's opinion of his vehicle and previous accidents.
A detailed description of some cases is given.
