Abstract
This paper discusses some of the fundamental advantages of using a special booster engine (s) for augmenting the takeoff thrust of commercial transports. The additional thrust provided by this principal offers increased route segment versatility by providing a wider range of tradeoffs in the takeoff distance, payload, range, safety, and noise level patterns for a particular aircraft. It further describes the flexibility in configurations that this principle provides the manufacturer for a given model.
Also discussed in general terms is how the limited flight envelope and short operating time required for booster engines can be used to effectively reduce the engine's weight and volume.
